What young India doesn't understand about politics?
See you all at 5 PM today to meet Shweta Shalini for a candid discussion about Indian Politics.
My Dear Friends
Today evening at 5 pm IST, I am will be in conversation with Shweta Shalini to understand the current political scenario and to place us, the youth, in perspective with the events that are currently unfolding.
Firstly, we need to answer why is it important to be aware of the political scenario? Politics is chaotic, and is so uncertain, no one knows what will happen tomorrow so why should we invest our energy in political conversations? Why can’t we be blissfully apolitical?
The answer lies in the question, the uncertainty and instability of politics demands that we pay attention to. Politics are not meant to be once a 5-year conversation, just for the sake of whom to vote or whether to vote at all. The fact that we don’t routinely invest our energies towards being informed about what is happening, and how it is affecting us is the reason why we as a country have consistently elected governments that failed to provide what we want or rather what we need.
And this is not about BJP or Congress, this is not about center or state, this is not about right or left, the fact that most of us dwell in these binaries while discussing politics is the reason why we need to have more conversations and discussions. There is nothing more harmful than this black and white view of the world.
Ironically, our entire political understanding is hinged on the categorical division of left and right when in reality these terms came into play as mere chance.
The term “left” and “right” originated during the French revolution of 1789, during a meeting of the members of the National Assembly. Those people who were in support of the monarch, and the traditional form of administration were seated on the right and the supporters of the revolution, those who wanted to radicalise the system of governance were seated on the left. And thus began this saga of the political divide.
To deep dive more into this conversation, register for today’s event and you will receive the meeting link on your email along with one month of Relatively Correct Publication subscription.
A massive shout out to my friends at Bolti Bandh who make these conversations possible, it is very important to learn how can we have more meaningful conversations on the internet about polarised topics.
P.S This newsletter edition will be updated post the event discussion so that we have our answers about India’s Politics.
See you all.
